  • Why does this matter? If you wait until after you separate to file, your claim goes into the standard queue, and you could be waiting months for exams and a rating decision. By filing through the BDD program while you are still in uniform (between 90 and 180 days before separation), you complete your exams early. This means your effective date is locked to the day after you separate, and your disability pay can begin much sooner after you transition to civilian life.
